Rosa Loves… Blogger Confessions.

I can’t cook.

Cooking has never been my forte. My family is full of talented cooks and somehow I didn’t inherit the ‘cooking’ gene. My grandmother’s food was to die for, my great-grandfather was an incredible baker, and both my parents can prepare the most excellent mexican dishes. So, what happened? To be honest, I am not sure.

My lack of cooking skills is a bit puzzling since I started to develop a love and appreciation for food at a very young age. Case in point, in my favorite childhood photo, I’m about 5 years old and happily eating a giant burrito. Growing up, I enjoyed watching my grandmother work her magic in the kitchen and she was always very patient with me when I tried to help (let me emphasize “I tried to help”). When I moved to my own place after college preparing my meals was a challenge; I was able to figure out the basics and that was about it. I truly believe that my failed culinary attempts have allowed me to appreciate the passion and talent of every chef whose food I’ve tasted even more.

You might be wondering about the José Andrés book in the photo. Well, I gave that book to my husband for Christmas last year. You see, in our household, he’s the cook. Lola and I eagerly sit by the dining table or the living room while my husband works in the kitchen. He loves to cook and I can’t cook, so it’s a perfect match, don’t you think?
