Rosa Loves… Vacation time with the family.

Hello everyone, we are back!

After a few weeks of crazy hours at work and other personal commitments, the whole family decided to go on a little vacation to Charlottesville, VA. We love spending time in this charming town. My husband and I were able to enjoy some fabulous home cooked meals as well as some awesome food at the local restaurants. We were able to catch up with our favorite TV shows, especially Hannibal. I am not gonna lie, but I was a bit skeptical about this show but when I realized that DC-based chef Jose Andres was the culinary consultant, I just couldn’t resist. Lola took a lot of naps, attempted to chase our neighbors’ chickens, and met some new friendly dogs. We all had a great time and now are ready to get back to our routine.

In terms of blogging, I want to start sharing with you some upcoming events in the city. I will post the information and flyers on the right side column. Rosa Loves… A sugar overload at the beginning of the month.

Yep, I think I might have overdone with the sugar last Saturday when Rebecca, Carmen, Julie (Table for Two Blog), and Julie (Julip Made) met at Matisse for one of our blogger brunches. As you might recall, I shared some awesome beignets with the ladies. Though my first thought was to order something savory for my entrée, I just couldn’t resist the temptation of something sweet so I ordered the Brandied French Toast. What can I say? I just love sweets, especially French toast.

Rosa Loves… Roses.

As I was going through my phone photos the other day, I realized that I indeed love roses. I enjoy having them around the apartment and of course, I love photographing them. So tell me, what’s your favorite flower?

On a completely different topic, I know I haven’t been posting much lately. Work has been insane and I will be taking it slow here on the blog during the next few weeks. I love sharing snapshots of my life and photos of Lola with you and I don’t want to stop doing it. I truly enjoy you visiting my blog and leaving such sweet comments. Rosa Loves… Strawberries.

I absolutely love strawberries and this time of the year is my favorite because I can get a fresh batch every week. Last weekend, I went to the farmers market and brought home some of the best strawberries I’ve had in months. During a grocery store trip last week, I stumbled upon some Bourbon Vanilla ice cream and let me tell you, the combination of this ice cream with the delicious strawberries was to die for. I kind of want to do it all over again this weekend.

Here’s a few photos I took in the last week:

I attended my friend Anne’s beautiful wedding at the Woodrow Wilson House in Kalorama/Dupont Circle. I loved that the museum was opened during the reception and I was able to learn some interesting facts about the 28th President of the United States.
Lani and I had dinner at Jaleo and then went to see the documentary ‘The Tents’ at Bethesda Row.
After a stressful week at work, I went for a walk on Saturday morning to relax. Luckily, I returned home just in time before the rain arrived.
I couldn’t get enough of my new striped shirt and it was part of my Sunday outfit (of course, I added a little sparkle).

Rosa Loves… A Friday afternoon in Georgetown.

Life has been a little busy and I really needed a break from work. So on Friday afternoon after finishing a few things in the lab, I got on the metro to meet Sara and we headed to Georgetown. First on the agenda was a Danielle Nicole presentation at Cusp. I was able to finally meet the fabulous handbag designer in person and I totally fell in love with several pieces but the Bella Crossbody was my favorite. Next, I met my husband for a late lunch at Kafe Leopold’s. I was very excited because it was my husband’s first time eating there and he loved it. For dessert, we walked a couple of blocks to have pie and coffee at Pie Sisters. We also did a little couch shopping and I am happy to report that we found one. Woohoo! It was so comfortable, we were ready to take a nap right there at the store, true story. At the end of the day and on the way home, I realized how much I truly enjoyed my afternoon off with my husband and my friends.

By the way, Prince Harry was around Georgetown at the same time I was there but I didn’t run into him. I think that would have made my afternoon even more awesome ;)

Rosa Loves… The perfect lipstick for spring.

A couple of weeks ago, I decided I was ready for spring and a new lipstick seemed like a good idea. I wanted a fun color so after trying on a few shades, I chose Fireball from Pure Color Vivid Shine collection by Estee Lauder. It’s the perfect shimmery orange-coral lipstick for spring and it’s super creamy and light. What’s your favorite lipstick color for spring? Share in the comments.

Rosa Loves… To share some random thoughts and photos of pretty flowers.

My favorite camera lens broke on Saturday and I had a minor freak out when that happened. I love playing with my camera and I try to challenge myself a bit but lately I’ve been going through a very comfortable phase. I found a lens that I love and settings on my camera that work so I’ve been a little lazy with my photography. When my lens started misbehaving on Saturday, my first thought was ‘Crap! I won’t be able to shoot any photos until I get it back from the repair shop’. Of course that is not true since I have another lens. After dropping off the faulty lens for repairs, I came home and started to take test shots of the pretty flowers with a different lens. There was no reason to freak out. Yes, the broken lens was interfering with my routine but it’s not the end of the world. I can still play with my camera and I have to admit that I had a lot of fun rediscovering my other forgotten lens. For me, photography is supposed to be fun and minor hiccups like this one should not get in the way.

Rosa Loves… Ladies Lunch at Proof.

There’s nothing better than catching up with some of the most fashionable ladies in DC over lunch. Right at the end of the conference I attended, Carla, Sara and I went to Proof for some great food and a lovely chat. I had the sautéed potato gnocchi, which I always order it because it’s kind of amazing (and I kind of wished I had a plate in front of me right now), and for dessert, I thought that the sorbet would be a refreshing choice. While enjoying our food, we talked about science (Carla is a scientist too!), fashion, and restaurants. When we were done with our lunch, I went home and took the rest of the afternoon off to relax before going back to the lab the next day.

Rosa Loves… A very minty outfit.

After getting all my spring clothes out of storage, I knew I wanted to wear my favorite mint sweater almost immediately (you can see the sweater in more detail here on Blair). While getting dressed over the weekend, I thought that my sweater would make a great combo with a mint necklace. The end result was a bit minty and I kind of loved it.

Note: The necklace above is from J.Crew Factory and it is no longer available online, but you can see a very similar version by Jeweliq here. The sweater is from H&M and it was purchase last year.

Rosa Loves… A relatively quiet weekend with Lola.

Sometimes all you need is a weekend at home and that’s what I did. I spent most of our time at home, relaxing and enjoying the company of my little Lola. Luckily, I didn’t plan much for the weekend except for running a couple of errands and a low key brunch with friends. The rest of the time was spent drinking Italian sodas, eating cookies, watching movies, and doing a little photography.

Rosa Loves… Macarons as the perfect conference snack.

The conference I attended was a bit long; five days of science are awesome, but sometimes there’s so little time in between talks that it’s hard to get a snack. So when I heard that DC Patisserie would be at the Artisans’ Market at Williams-Sonoma the weekend of my conference, I made a quick stop on my way to pick up a friend who was staying in Bethesda. While the macarons didn’t last long, they were indeed the perfect snack for the first few days at the conference. By the way, my favorite one was Cherry Blossom of course, but they were all equally delicious.

Rosa Loves… Science, Friends & Brunch.

And I’m back.

Let me tell you, it has been a busy couple of weeks but I am glad to be back blogging. I really missed it. Anyhow, I had a lot of fun at the conference I attended last week. Last Saturday, I got on the metro and went to the Convention Center in downtown DC for the first round of scientific talks. My first day at the conference wasn’t too busy so I took a little break to meet with the lovely Ashlyn for brunch and mimosas at The Hamilton. After, I went back home to run some errands and then headed back to the Convention Center for more talks and to catch up with old friends who were in town for the conference. Overall, I think that science, friends and brunch are a pretty good combination, don’t you think?

Rosa Loves… High Heeled Traveler’s Lipstick Chart.

I recently attended a garden party at Jamie’s home to celebrate the launch of her magazine High Heeled Traveler. The party was fabulous and we got a chance to explore her incredibly gorgeous apartment. Jamie’s taste is impeccable and I love the combination of vintage and modern pieces she has throughout the place. While admiring her apartment, one more thing caught my eye: her lipstick chart. I love lipstick and I probably have too many and remembering what’s in my makeup drawer can be a challenge. So when I saw Jamie’s lipstick tracking system I thought it was genius. I must do this ASAP!

Rosa Loves… Easter Weekend.

The weekend was full of activities. Since my husband was out of town, I spent time with friends. On Friday night, I met with Apollina and Sara at Cava in for a belated birthday celebration (Happy Belated Birthday Sara!). I then started my Saturday super early by having breakfast with Ashlyn and in the afternoon, I attended Jamie’s magazine launch party. On Easter Sunday, Rebecca and I had brunch at Le Chat Noir since we both were craving their fries (honestly, they are the best!). After I got home, I thought that eating a few peeps was a good idea. Needless to say, I went into a sugar coma and I had to take a nap which was kind of perfect given the rainy weather we had.

NOTE: I will be taking a mini Spring Break. I have a conference to prepare for at work as well as a couple of other projects. I will be back in a week and half or so. See you then.

Rosa Loves… Pink.

I think I am going through a bit of a pink phase. Lately, I’ve been incorporating more color into my outfits with bright pink blouses and accessories. Also, pink has been my preferred color when picking flowers for my apartment. I don’t know if the crazy weather we’ve had is responsible for the sudden craving of pink, but I kind of love it.

Rosa Loves… Fashionistas, Macarons & Shopping on a Sunday.

We had an amazing time at our Madewell event this past Sunday in Georgetown. Everyone found something perfect to add to their spring outfits and the different choices of chambray shirts were a big hit. Even my friend Lacey in NYC called the store to do some shoe shopping. The macarons from Macaron Bee were spectacular and we couldn’t stop eating them. Photographer extraordinaire Ashley of Ashley in DC was there snapping photos and we also had a little giveaway that involved a Chihuahua tote, Grace Coddington and zombies.

Thank you so much to everyone who came to shop with me and to all the fabulous Madewell ladies (Hi, Ella, Ruth, Taylor, Kim, Jynell, and Laura!).

And yep, that’s me in the pink blouse and polka dot pants. Something you don’t see often in the blog (wait, it’s more like never), but I thought ‘why not? just this one time’. No worries, we will be back to our regular model Lola soon enough, after all, she’s the star of this blog.

Rosa Loves… Button Down Shirts.

A button down shirt will always sneak its way into my outfits. True story. I just can’t help it. I just love the versatility of the button down shirt; I can go for a casual look with a pair of skinny jeans or add a fabulous necklace and fancy shoes for ‘a night out on the town’ outfit. I truly think every woman should have a white button down shirt, it’s classic and it goes with everything. I am also a big fan of a chambray shirt, it can basically be worn all year-round: during the winter, underneath a sweater and in the summer, over a floral dress as a light jacket. While I tend to gravitate towards neutrals, I recently picked up this Madewell bright pink shirt and I am loving the pop of color on my outfits.

Rosa Loves… The best anniversary gift…ever!

I received an anniversary gift from my husband this week and it was awesome. One of my favorite photos is the one I took last year at a Dior event here in DC. I still remember the moment: the stunning model stood in the middle of the room as we were all mesmerized by the beauty of the dress. Amazing moment! When my husband saw the photo on Instagram a few days later, he loved it. So he thought that a canvas of this particular photo would be the perfect anniversary gift this year and it was indeed. I just need to figure out where it will go in the apartment.

BTW, the model in the photo is the lovely Rebekah who also happens to be a fabulous food writer and a pastry chef.
